Dorothea Grow


Dorothea (Dix) Grow, 97, of Wolf Point and Billings, died April 24, 2019. She was born July 24, 1921, to John and Nora (Riedel) Dix in Rock Township, Wis. She grew up with three brothers and a sister on a dairy farm, attended country schools and graduated from Marshfield High School.
Later, while attending Wisconsin Rapids Teacher College, she met Bob Grow. They married May 22, 1942 and raised five children. They were married for 65 years. Their lives revolved around their family, friends, community and church.
She taught school in Wisconsin, Lewistown and Wolf Point. She retired in 1987 after a remarkable 26-year career instructing and molding hundreds of students and continued as a substitute teacher for many years following retirement. She loved all children and treated many neighborhood children as her own, stating, “There is always room for one more.”
She was committed to lifelong learning and enthusiastically tried new endeavors throughout her entire life.
She enjoyed playing golf, cards and bingo, crocheting and watching the Seattle Mariners. She and Bob enjoyed camping, hunting and traveling together.
She was preceded in death by her siblings; husband, Bob; and son, Richard.
Survivors include son, Bob Grow of Broomfield, Colo.; daughters, Karilynn Volk of Billings, Patti Kroger of Worden and Janet Novak of Glendive; 15 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Smith’s West Chapel, 304 34th St. West in Billings.
