Commissioners Okay Land Purchase

The Roosevelt County Commissioners met Tuesday. Feb. 19, with commissioners Gary Macdonald and Gordon Oelkers in attendance.
Following the acceptance of meeting minutes for the Feb. 5 regular meeting, the commissioners accepted letters of resignation from 911 dispatchers Jo Ann Nelson and Ikaika Edmundson-Shook.
Nelson has been with dispatch for approximately 18 years, estimated Macdonald. An open house retirement party for Nelson was planned for Feb. 20. The commissioners thanked Nelson and Edmundson-Shook for their service.
The commissioners approved an agreement to purchase land near Culbertson’s Big Sky Field as part of a planned runway expansion. The land, 23 acres located north of the airport, will be purchased for $39,600, plus an additional $525 for foundation board member expenses, $1,200 for trustee fees and $14,085 for landowner attorney fees. The Federal Aviation Administration has agreed to cover 90 percent of the total cost to the county, which is approximately $1,700 per acre.
Oelkers said the purchase is part of a 10-year plan to expand the airport’s runway. He said the air ambulance service has requested that the runway be longer and wider and said that many modern planes are requiring larger runways.
Claims for Feb. 8 were approved in the amount of $145,460.64.
Per a request from Roosevelt County Attorney Austin Knudsen, a pay raise was approved for attorney’s office employee Christa Wagner.
Annual pay raises were approved for dispatch employees Mary Damon and Rachael Parker.
